The woes of Worrall Thompson

TV chef and restaurateur Antony Worrall Thompson, has been cautioned by police after being caught stealing from a Tesco supermarket in Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire.

The 60-year-old star of Ready Steady Cook was caught by security staff after he failed to scan certain items at the self-service checkout. Staff had installed a secret camera to cover the check-out after becoming suspicious about his actions. They wanted to be certain before confronting such a high-profile customer.

On at least five occasions over a two-week period, Worrall Thompson had been filmed putting items straight into his bag without being scanned. The stolen goods were said to be of “relatively low value” but included cheeses and bottles of wine.

A statement published on his official website said:  "I am so sorry for all my recent stupid and irresponsible actions; I am of course devastated for my family and friends, whom I've let down, and will seek the treatment that is clearly needed.”

In his first TV interview after the event Worrall Thompson talked of the hounding he received from the press, insisting his actions didn’t deserve such front page coverage. “I would rather have been fined or gone to prison because the press have been extraordinary. It's just been beyond any relationship to the crime. I mean I wasn't charged, I was given a rap on the knuckles. I did a crime, I appreciate that it was very very stupid and I am very very embarrassed."

The chef has struggled with his business in recent years: in 2009 he was forced to put the six restaurants and gastropubs he ran into administration.
