According to experts, eating just one sausage or around three rashers of bacon a day can increase the risk of developing bowel cancer by a fifth. They also warn that eating just 50g of processed meat daily increases the chance of getting bowel cancer by 20 %.

The World Cancer Research Fund charity (WCRF) has called for more action to get across the message to those that regularly eat processed meats that they are putting their health at risk.

In October, a major WCRF report recommended that people consume less than 500g of cooked red meat per week and avoid processed meat altogether if possible. The report found the evidence of the link between processed meats to be “convincing” and claimed that 30% of Britons are, in fact, aware of the risks.
