Fairtrade Fortnight Celebrates Big Sales

The sale of Fairtrade products in the UK has reached over an estimated half a billion pounds, the Fairtrade Foundation have announced. Sale of their products jumped 81 percent from 2006 to 2007, an increase of £273 million and an overall rise of 40 percent from 2002.

The most popular product with the Fairtrade badge has been bananas with over £150 million, and now 1 in 4 that are sold in the UK are certified Fairtrade. Closely following is coffee with £117 million and tea rose by 24 percent to jus over £30 million.  Clothes too are not being missed out, with millions more being made using fairtrade cotton.

Earlier this year sugar giant Tate & Lyle announced that their retail cane sugar would all be Fairtrade within two years, although its other line of sugar would not yet switch to Fairtrade.
