sausageFollowing on from the hotly contested county level Sizzle Off’s, eleven butchers finally went head to head in the final of the West Midlands Tastiest Sausage Competition.

The Grand Final of the West Midlands Tastiest Sausage Competition was held in January at the Birmingham flagship AGA store. The panel of judges was headed for the second year by award winning chef and food writer, Sophie Grigson, other judges included the BBC’s Nick Owen and Sarah Falkland.

The West Midlands Tastiest Sausage Competition was devised in 2001 to coincide with Farmhouse Breakfast Week, a promotion run by the Home Grown Cereals’ Authority to highlight the variety and taste of breakfast products.

nottinghamA restaurant is set to open in a former toilet block in Nottingham city centre.

Umar Jaspal is investing £500,000 on the renovations to the building on Carrington Street. The restaurant, to be called Eat Inn, will serve a variety of food including meat, chips and salad.

Jaspal, who owns other restaurants in Leicester, where he lives, said, ""I saw it when I first came to Nottingham, as soon as I came out of the train station it caught my eye. When I saw it there standing next to the canal I knew it had potential. It is a wonderful building with so much character. I’ve not seen anything like it before.”

Mr Jaspal said he is planning to build a two-storey extension, which will allow for downstairs seating looking out onto the canal. The restaurant is likely to be open between 11am and 2am, though it will not be serving alcohol.

michelinBirmingham could be said to have earned the title of the UK’s regional culinary capital after three of its home-grown chefs were awarded coveted Michelin stars for their outstanding cooking.

No town or city outside London boasts so many top ranking restaurants in the 2009 Michelin Guide for Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

Glynn Purnell picks up a star for Purnell’s in Cornwall Street. Luke Tipping, executive chef at Simpsons’ retained an award for the Edgbaston restaurant for the fifth year running.

The biggest surprise was the eponymous restaurant from Richard Turner, located in the suburb of Harborne, winning one of 26 new one-star awards in the guide.

All of Birmingham’s top three Michelin chefs hail from the city, also having learnt their trade there. All use classic French cuisine, blended into new-wave British cooking.
