Young chefs from the Midlands are officially a force to be reckoned with after taking all three spots on the podium at one of the most prestigious hunts for culinary talent in the UK.
Helen Evans from Birmingham, who works under Michelin-starred Andreas Antona at the acclaimed Simpsons Restaurant in Edgbaston, was crowned British Culinary Federation Young Chef of the Year 2009.
Hot on Helen's heels were Solihull's Aaron Darnley, chef at Birmingham's Edmunds Restaurant in Brindley Place, and Matthew Willdig from Norton Canes in Cannock, chef at Moat House in Acton Trussell, Stafford.
Sixteen finalists, aged 23 years old or under, working in a UK restaurant, or still training at college, took part. They had to create a mind-blowing three course meal for two persons, incorporating a fish starter using bream, main course using British pork and a sweet using pears and chocolate.

A team from Atul Kochhars Michelin-starred restaurant Benares was one of a series of high profile chefs bringing fine dining to a Northamptonshire pub.
The Crown, in Weston, has hosted a series of nights featuring well known chefs. Benares head chef, Naven Prasad oversaw a four course meal for 85 diners. Previous evenings have featured Mark Hix of the Hix Oyster and Chop House and Harry Harris of Soho House Group.
Robert Grover, landlord of the Crown, told The Publican magazine, "It's amazing that despite agreeing to cook for us on the Friday before the event, following ill health preventing legendary chef Udit Sarkhel cooking on the night and a fire closing Benares on the Saturday, we still had Naven cooking for us."
