haiti-earthquakePupils at a school in Allestree, Derby have joined forces with a local Indian restaurant to raise money for the victims of the Haiti earthquake.

Sixth form pupils at the Woodlands school organised a charity night at the local Saffron restaurant - which is owned by one of the school's science teachers Abdul Shahid. Staff and pupils enjoyed a meal at the restaurant and managed to raise more than £600 for the Aquabox charity, which has just sent 800 water purification kits out to Haiti.

Shahid said, "The charity night was organised by the sixth formers from Woodlands School and supported by friends from Rolls-Royce. It was a great night and we've raised a good sum for Haiti. We would like to thank all those who supported the charity."

alaskaA chef from one of Birmingham's top Indian restaurants has beaten stiff competition to win a prestigious seafood recipe award.

Sudha Shanka Saha, Executive Chef at Saffron, on Wolverhampton Road, triumphed in the Alaska Seafood Recipe Challenge. Organised in association with The Craft Guild of Chefs, the competition invited professional chefs to devise new and innovative recipes for sustainable, wild Alaskan seafood. Three finalists were assessed on technique, presentation and taste.

"My style is more of a modern approach to traditional Indian cooking. I try to break conventional boundaries, to use local and seasonal produce, flavoured with authentic spices and with a Western presentation," Saha said.
