The famed Ghandi’s restaurant on Kennington Road, which has been a firm favourite for MPs even since it opened close to the Houses of Parliament over 25 years ago, made the headlines recently for its role in the bank bailout crisis. It all started with a phone call from the restaurant’s regular customer, Alistair Darling MP, Chancellor of the Exechequer, one night, ordering a takeaway for up to 30 people, worth £245, with dishes including various tandoori items and curries such as chicken korma and lamb pasanda. As it transpired, with the large food order being delivered to the Treasury, it was the moment when the Exchequer was taking a break with several of his officials from marathon negotiations with bankers. Already dubbed as the night of “the Balti Bailout”, the next day saw the historic financial deal where the government announced a £500 billion rescue plan for British banking. “I’ve been in business a very long time and this has been a very proud moment for me,” said Ghandi owner Zalal Uddin. “I feel as if I’ve played a pivotal moment in Britain’s history!” Amongst the restaurant’s regular clientele of MPs over the years have been Gordon Brown, Jack Straw, Jeff Hoon, John Major and Lord Paddy Ashdown.
