UK restaurants are retaining customers during the hard times of the recession by increased use of deals and vouchers, offering over £135 per week in discounts – according to a new dinning survey by Livebookings.
The Livebookings Restaurant Index is a new quarterly, pan-European survey tracking dinning trends. It is based on data from online reservations made for the 8,500 restaurants that use the livebookings service.
The figures also show that online bookings have risen by 43% during the first half of 2011, with bookings made on a mobile phone rising by two thirds over this period. Livebookings predict that at this rate, one in five online bookings will be made using a smartphone by 2012.
Colin Tenwick, CEO of Livebookings, said: "The economic climate has seen huge innovations in the restaurant industry. By creating a deals market and through embracing technology, restaurants have shown a robustness at a time when many other businesses are starting to feel nervous."
When it comes to the price of a meal, Indian cuisine is one of the cheapest. The average cost of a three-course Indian meal works out at £23.92, just above Spanish, Mexican and Eastern European. This is compared to £29.12 for British or £32.99 for French.
