Manchester girl dies after eating curry

A 13-year-old girl from Greater Manchester, died after suffering a severe allergic reaction after eating a takeaway chicken tikka masala meal.

Molly Dyer, of Whitefield – who had a peanut allergy and asthma – went into acute anaphylaxis and suffered a severe asthma attack after eating the curry.

Her mother, Meryl Mathews, told the inquest at Rochdale Magistrates Court that she and Molly had been at a friend’s house where an Indian meal was ordered from the Shabaz Takeaway in Whitefield in September 2010.

However, soon after beginning the meal, Molly complained of having tingly lips and feeling wheezy. Her mother, who is a hospital nurse, called an ambulance which rushed her to Fairfield Hospital where doctors battled to save her for four hours.

Pathologist Dr Stephanie Bite-tti said she could not determine whether Molly’s death was caused by the allergic reaction or the asthmatic attack. Coroner Simon Nelson recorded a narrative verdict.

He said: “Molly died following a severe anaphylactic reaction triggered by her pre-existing peanut allergy to which an acute asthma attack was a contributory factor.'
