British company selling tandoor’s to India

The Clay Oven Company, based in Park Royal, London has seen an 80% increase in the number of Tandoori ovens it has sold to India over the past year.

Company Director, Dr Levon Gulian said the secret is the clay that is used in the construction of the ovens. He told the Evening Standard: “"Ovens from India often need more clay added after a few months whereas British clay is more durable. We mix it ourselves and have perfected it over 40 years with our special formula. Clay from India tends to crack."

The company was established by Levon’s father Shahi Gulian in 1974, and have since expanded selling to major clients the world over including the famous Taj group of hotels in India, the Jumeirah Group, London’s famous Cinnamon Club and the Conran Group. One of their Tandoor ovens is used by James Martin, Cyrus Todiwala and Atul Kochhar for Saturday Kitchen Live.

Gulian said: It's an honour to sell our stock in India. In India the ovens are usually made by one person in each village. We were the first to mass produce them.
